Modernizing our Sewer System

The Junction City wastewater treatment infrastructure is failing the

Oregon Department of Environmental Quality requirements:

  • The 1948 sewer pipes are leaking.

  • The 1973 treatment plant is antiquated and undersized.

  • New sewer connections are severely limited until significant upgrades occur.

Essential improvements include constructing a modern wastewater treatment plant that will serve Junction City for the next 25+ years.

These upgrades will reduce sewage leaks, improve water discharge quality, enhance the environment, and allow future generations to build in Junction City.

Once funding is secured, construct wastewater treatment plant and upgrade sewer pipes.

How we got here

Constructed in the 1970's, the City's sewer treatment plant has had no significant upgrades since it's original construction.

In the 2000's, a process began to upgrade the plant, but uncertainty around the construction of a prison in the city halted the project and initiated a redesign.

Over the years, the City has worked closely with the Department of Environmental Quality to manage issues and revise mutual agreements.

Recent agreements resulted in the establishment of a number of projects the city must complete to resolve the building moratorium.

Influences on project urgency:

No significant changes since original construction

Preliminary work needs to be completed to determine cost, funding, and action.

Building Moratorium until Sewer System back in Compliance

Testing of System

As part of the mutual agreement and order with the Department of Environmental Quality, the city will be conducting testing on the sewer system.  The main sewer lines will undergo testing to determine what needs to be repaired/replaced in the collection system.

Types of testing:

Television Inspection (CCTV)

Smoke Test
